Belgian Liege Waffles

Belgian Liege Waffles

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups pearl sugar
  • 1 cup warm whole milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and make a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture, add the eggs, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Mix the ingredients until well combined, then add the softened butter and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Gently fold in the pearl sugar until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  5. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your waffle iron. Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions and place them on the preheated waffle iron.
  7. Cook the waffles according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually for 3-5 minutes, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
  8. Serve the Liege waffles warm, either plain or with your favorite toppings.

Notes

Belgian Liege Waffles are best enjoyed fresh and warm. The pearl sugar creates a delightful caramelized crunch on the outside, while the inside remains soft and flavorful. Customize your Liege waffles with toppings like whipped cream, fresh berries, or a dusting of powdered sugar for a truly indulgent treat.
