  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour until well combined to make a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook and stir until the mixture thickens.
  4. Add salt, pepper, and minced garlic (if using). Stir in the cheddar cheese until smooth and fully melted.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  7. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top for an extra cheesy crust.
  8. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  9. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, you can add diced ham or crispy bacon between the layers of potatoes. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences.
