Mustard Greens Recipe

Southern-Style Mustard Greens

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 bunches fresh mustard greens, washed and chopped
  • 1/2 pound smoked ham hock or turkey neck
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and garlic, sautéing until softened.
  2. Add the smoked ham hock or turkey neck to the pot, allowing it to brown on all sides.
  3. Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Add the mustard greens gradually, stirring to combine.
  4. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well and cover the pot. Let it simmer on low heat for 45-60 minutes, or until the greens are tender.
  5. Add apple cider vinegar and sugar (if desired) to balance the flavors. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  6. Once the greens are tender, remove the ham hock or turkey neck. Pull the meat from the bones and return it to the pot, discarding the bones.
  7. Serve the Southern-style mustard greens hot, with a side of cornbread or rice.

Notes

Adjust the spice level by controlling the amount of red pepper flakes. For a smokier flavor, consider using smoked paprika or adding a dash of liquid smoke. You can also experiment with different greens, such as collard greens or turnip greens, for variety.
