Sloppy Joes

Slow Cooker Ultimate Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain excess fat.
  2. Transfer the browned beef to the slow cooker.
  3. Add chopped onion, diced bell pepper, and minced garlic to the slow cooker.
  4. In a bowl, mix together ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  5. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables in the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours, allowing flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken.
  7. Stir occasionally during cooking, breaking up the beef as needed.
  8. Serve the Sloppy Joes on hamburger buns and enjoy!

Notes

For an extra depth of flavor, consider sautéing the onions and bell peppers in the skillet after browning the ground beef, just until softened, before adding them to the slow cooker. This step enhances the overall richness of the Sloppy Joes. Additionally, you can customize the spice level by adjusting the amount of chili powder and cayenne pepper according to your taste preferences. This versatile recipe pairs well with a side of coleslaw or pickles for a delightful, classic American meal.
